Google I/O
I watched Google I/O live yesterday late in the night on my Chromecast. It was insightful but tad long. Google covered many services ranging from new android hardware, android OS eco system (mobile, wearables, auto & home) to their cloud services. The most exiting parts for me were
Android One - This new device is exciting news, it runs stock android and it is going to be priced around 100$. This I am sure will create a huge impact in the Indian market. People have to realise that the smart phone penetration in India is still a huge vacuum to be filled.
Android L - The focus on the new OS from google coming later this year has been all about design. Google currently struggles to address design aspects of Android within the hugely fragmented market as seamlessly as Apple. Therefore, it becomes very important to come up with something that will help developers.
Is “Material Design” the answer? We don’t know just yet. The design though looks very flat following the trend set by Microsoft and followed by Apple. Not many features of the core OS were spoken. I am still excited to hear about it. Sad, it is not developer ready on my nexus 4.
Android Wear - What I liked most about Android wear was the proximity unlock feature, the phone is unlocked based on your wearable (achieved I believe using Bluetooth 4.0). it looked cool and I hope it goes a long way in how wearables and mobile can bring together seamless integration. The demo’s shown were not all that exciting. They should have picked more interesting use cases to demonstrate the value of a wearable.
Android Auto - This is a tough market if we consider the entire world. In India, i can buy a good entertainment system for my car beyond the one from my manufacturer. It is tricky, how this gets implemented.. I don’t think there was enough innovation done to rethink all use cases when it comes to a car. I believe this will change when Google launches driverless cars.
Android TV - The interesting aspect of this announcement was how Google is looking to bundle this with the TV sets; Sony, Sharp and others will be the first. This is one step forward in the right direction to remove all those dangling wires to connect additional set top boxes to my TV. I am more interested to see how this will transform into a gaming console going forward because that is where the big bucks are.
Google Drive - This for me was the best announcement of the day, for 10$ we will get unlimited storage on the drive. I will be one of the first to signup for this service.
Google Cloud Services - To see real time sentiment analysis of twitter feeds using google big data services was amazing. This just shows how easy it is to store and process large data sets on the cloud.
Google Chrome OS - I could not believe a lot of stuff spoken about Chrome OS as I have never seen it on a single laptop around me in the last 2 years. They spoke a lot about how they are bringing android apps to chrome OS.
Chromecast - The updates about chrome cast were welcoming. To be able to cast your phone camera live on TV will bring smiles on a lot of peoples faces.
